Edgewater Welcomes Steep Theatre
EDC is pleased to announce that Steep Theatre Company has chosen Edgewater for it's new home. We were pleased to work closely with Steep to find a home in Edgewater and add another amenity to the revitalizing Berwyn business district. In addition, EDC is helping Steep to identify sources of financial assistance to support the costs of building-out the space for their new home on Berwyn.
Peter Moore from Steep Theatre provides the following story about the move:
After launching our search for a new theater in November 2007, Steep
has signed a lease on a storefront space. Our new home is located at
1115 West Berwyn in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. Plans are in
place to open our 2008-2009 season in our new theater this Fall.
The Edgewater Development Corporation was a huge help in finding us a home in Edgewater. We're
looking forward to continuing to work with them as we become part of the neighborhood.
The new site is nearly the twice the size of our current theater and
will offer the sort of comfortable and professional performance space
that our audience and artists deserve, while not sacrificing the
intimacy that has been the trademark of Steep productions for years. We
are very excited about this space and the growth we are poised to make
in our new theater.
The space was formerly a small grocery store and has been vacant for
years. While we have made great strides towards reaching our
fundraising goals, there is a lot of work left to be done in order to
realize the vision we have for our new theater."

CHANGE OF DATE:
Planning & Development Meeting, Thursday May 8th, 7 pm
The May Meeting of the Edgewater Development Corporation and Edgewater Community Council joint Planning & Development Meeting has been changed to Thursday May 8th, due to a conflict with the ECC Fundraiser on May 1. The only Agenda Item for this meeting is a discussion of the possibility of a Historic District being established in the Northeast corner of Edgewater (Broadway to the lake and Hollywood to Devon) for some single family residential
properties. As described in a March 5th
2008 letter from Alderman Smith, "We will vote at the May Planning &
Zoning meeting on whether the 48th Ward should pursue landmarking for these
properties located in the 48th Ward."
The letter also stated that "Any proposed changes to the status of
these properties, such as landmarking, must address the issues of long term
care and ownership of the buildings and address the impact on the current
neighbors who own these properties." Please attend this meeting to give your input so that we are all prepared to discuss this at the the upcoming 48th Ward Zoning & Planning Committee.
Marketing & Retail Attraction Field Trip Saturday May 17th, 10 a.m. Join your neighbors to help identify options for adoption in Edgewater's commercial districts. The EDC Marketing & Retail Attraction Committee has been busy improving the EDC website, creating marketing materials, tracking commercial vacancies in Edgewater, and finding businesses to bring new commerce to Edgewater. Some of our recent success includes helping Uncommon Ground open on Devon and bringing Steep Theatre to Berwyn. Help us build on those successes by scoping-out new ideas for Edgewater. E-mail info@edgewaterdev.org or call 773-506-4016 for more information or to register for the field trip. Folks will rendez-vous at EDC offices at 9:45 a.m. at 6044 N Broadway.
