There's no better way to enjoy a beautiful September evening than to stroll the streets of Edgewater, taste fine dining, listen to music, dance away the calories, view fine art, discover eco-friendly businesses, and check out shopping specials.  You can do this all at Edgewater's Fall Dinner Crawl on September 25th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.. Twenty-six restaurants and businesses will be open for your enjoyment, allowing you to taste the world of flavors to be found in Edgewater. 
 
Food isn't all that we have prepared for the night.  You can browse local businesses offering Dinner Crawl specials, view fine art, tour a green roof,  listen to live music performances, dance on the Crawl, and more.
 
Where else can you sample 20 different restaurants and live entertainment for only $25!  We have a limited number of tickets, and we recommend purchasing your tickets in advance, as our last Dinner Crawl sold out in advance and no tickets were available at the door. The Edgewater Development Corporation is proud to present the Fall Dinner Crawl, in association with our sponsors and the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce.  Here is the full list of restaurants participating in the Fall Dinner Crawl:
 
Abyssinia, 5842 N. Broadway
This fine Edgewater restaurant serves up authentic Ethiopian cuisine in a friendly atmosphere.  This provides one more local option to whet your appetite for tasty Ethiopian fare.
 
African Harambe, 7537 N. Clark St
This restaurant is owned by Sisay, previously of Ethiopian Diamond, and, though he opened his new restaurant in Rogers Park, he is coming back to Edgewater for the night!  Sisay will serve tasty delights at a host location for the night of the Dinner Crawl. 
 
Broadway Cellars, 5900 N. Broadway
Broadway Cellars is a neighborhood bistro serving American-style food with a California bent.  Wine, as their name would suggest, is their specialty, and the restaurant often hosts wine tasting and food pairing events.  The owners have taken a great interest in being "green" and have instituted extensive recycling efforts at their establishment, including hosting a cardboard recycling site. 
 
Bunz Bakery, 1136 W. Thorndale
A new addition to Edgewater, this family-owned bakery specializes in traditional Chinese buns.  Flavors range from red bean, BBQ, and ham and cheese to coconut and other sweet flavors.  American favorites, such as cookies and muffins, are baked fresh daily too.  Bunz also offers smoothies.  Next time you are on your why to the Thorndale "El" stop, take a look inside this new restaurant and try some "bunz." 
 
The Dawghaus Café, 6219 N. Sheridan,, Berger Park
The Dawghaus Café is a pleasant getaway for lunch or dinner while enjoying the beautiful Chicago shoreline.  Located in Berger Park overlooking Lake Michigan, the café offers classic and unique variations of the Chicago Hot Dog, Sandwich Wraps, Summer Salads, Ice Cream, and other tasty treats, as well as live music on the weekends.  Josh Cobb, a laid back guitar player, will perform during the dinner crawl.
 
Ethiopian Diamond, 6120 N. Broadway
Break bread (injera) together at Ethiopian Diamond.  This restaurant serves traditional communal style Ethiopian dining.  Every weekend the restaurant hosts live jazz for your enjoyment, and once a month it offers a cultural coffee time with music.  Celebrating 12 years of business, Ethiopian Diamond wants to thank Edgewater for your support!
 
Gino's North, 1111 W. Granville
Gino's North, at the Granville Red Line stop, features a fabulous art deco bar dating back to the 1930's, has been serving Peggy's (their Grand Dame Chef for 30 years) Gourmet Pizza as well as a variety of pasta, salads, sandwiches and hearty cocktails.  This Edgewater Landmark is truly Chicago's best kept secret.
 
Green Village Restaurant, 5848 N. Broadway
Green Village is true to its name with a cobblestone and garden motif. This restaurant specializes in Mediterranean cooking ranging from hummus and falafel to Ethiopian fare.  Come and taste their wonderful humus and babaghanouj. 
 
Habibi Restaurant, 1225-27 W. Devon
Middle Eastern cuisine at its best and fantastic service make Habibi a must stop along the Dinner Crawl.  Its moderately priced but exquisite dishes such as labna, baba ghanoush, musakhan are sure to please. Don't miss the cinnamon tea.  Egyptian wall coverings and sculptures add to the restaurant's charm. 
 
Metropolis, 1039 W. Granville
Grab coffee, tea, or a bite to eat at Metropolis, a hip Edgewater café.  Supporting local artists, the restaurant hosts musicians and displays a wide array of art.  Chicago Reader 2008 named Metropolis the Best Coffeehouse in Chicago.  Other recent accolades include, best latte in Chicago, Chicago Reader 2005 & 2007, best place to buy beans in Chicago, New City 2007, and Microroaster of the year, Roast Magazine 2007. 
 
Ole St. Andrews Inn, 5938 N. Broadway
Named after St. Andrews in Scotland, this pub serves Scottish, Irish, British, and American grub.  Legend has it that the pub is haunted by a friendly ghost of a former owner, Frank Giff, so maybe you'll even see a ghost along the crawl!
 
Pumping Company, 6157 N. Broadway
Once a water pumping station for Edgewater fire trucks, this establishment now quenches thirst with a wide variety of beers and serves up a menu of satisfying pub grub.  Though a sports bar (with 11 flat screen TVs), Pumping Company also features bruschetta, calamari, a fireplace, and free Wi-Fi.
 
Ras Dashen, 5846 N.  Broadway
Enjoy exotic Ethiopian cuisine at Ras Dashen.  Vegetarian, vegan, lamb, poultry, and beef dishes are served in traditional Ethiopian style.  Chef Zenash Beyene, considered one of Chicago's best Ethiopian chefs, has owned and operated Ethiopian restaurants in Saudi Arabia and Sudan.  Live jazz ensembles regularly perform at the restaurant.   
 
Stella Espresso Company, 1259 W. Devon
Tucked away among the shops of Devon, Stella's is a pleasant surprise.  This quiet and relaxing restaurant serves up Intelligensia coffees and teas as well as a great selection of baked goods.  Curl up with a book on one of their comfortable couches or bring your lap top and take advantage of free Wi-Fi.

 Super Taqueria Susupuato,   6161 N. Broadway
Spicing up the dinner crawl, Super Taqueria Susupuato serves up authentic Latin American cuisine.  Whether you are in the mood for a tamale, or steak, or seafood, this restaurant has something appetizing to offer every palate.
 
Terry's Toffee, featured at the Fig Media DJloung - 1120 W. Granville
Terry Opalek, owner of Terry's Toffee, is an Edgewater resident and owner of Terry's Toffee.  When you taste samples of their famous toffee (recently included in the goodie bags at the Oscars!) - you'll know why their slogan is "taste a little piece of heaven."  Terry uses his grandmother's toffee recipe as the basis for these gourmet goodies.   You can find his product locally at the Andersonville Galleria or online at www.terrystoffee.com.
 
Thai Grill & Noodle Bar, 1040 W. Granville
Delicious, authentic, and fresh food at a reasonable price.  If this sounds good, try the Thai Grill and Noodle Bar.  The restaurant features authentic Thai cuisine made from fresh ingredients.  The Bubble Tea Bar features seven flavors of bubble teas and fresh fruit smoothies.
 
True Nature Foods Juice Bar, 6034 N. Broadway
Edgewater offers a truly unique shopping experience at this locally-owned health food store.  Besides doing all your grocery shopping here, you can also get tasty prepared foods and drinks at the recently opened juice and food bar.  Try their tasty homemade soups, smoothies, sandwiches and other healthy fare.  True Nature is also the home to Edgewater's first green roof, as well as being the largest pick-up station for Farmer Tom's CSA.  Members of Farmer Tom's get weekly shares of organic produce, bringing organic goodness to your table!
 
Uncommon Ground, 1401 W. Devon Ave
Open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner daily, this restaurant features contemporary American cuisine with an emphasis on seasonal, regional, and organic ingredients.  National music acts perform regularly, and local Chicago artists decorate the restaurant's walls.  During the Fall Dinner Crawl, Uncommon Ground will serve tasty treats made from locally-sourced ingredients and host a Green Room eco-mixer with tours of their organic green roof, info on their green business practices and presentations from other green businesses.
 
Viet Bistro, 1346 W. Devon Ave
Chef/Owner Dan Nguyen of Pasteur never closed his French Vietnamese concept, but simply relocated to Devon Avenue and reopened as Viet Bistro and Lounge.  The restaurant features affordable, delicate and authentic Vietnamese food, a passion for specialty cocktails and wine, and attention to detail throughout, from the décor to the menu and drink pairings.  The lounge's comfortable seating, unique butterfly artwork, exposed brick walls, and high loft ceilings create a hip and intimate atmosphere.
 
Other Event Highlights:
  • Uncommon Ground will feature their Green Room Session eco-mixer at which you will taste appetizers made from locally sourced products, be able to tour their green roof, and hear about other green/eco-friendly businesses.   
  • Fig Media is hosting a DJ Lounge with music spun by their talented professional DJs that will help you "get your groove on" and dance away the calories.  Fig Media is also hosting Terry's Toffee, who will distribute their famous toffee to give you energy and dance inspiration!  Terry's Toffee is an Edgewater original that was honored to be included in the goody bag at the Academy Awards, but you don't need to be a movie star to enjoy these taste sensations. This dance party celebrates the opening of Fig's new urban photo studio, so, even if you don't dance, come by to get your photo taken!
  • Dawghaus Café will have live music performances at their beautiful lakeside location in Berger Park at Granville and the lake.  They will also be serving their upside down sundae.
  • Loyola University is sponsoring a trolley that will circulate along the Dinner Crawl route to help you move along the Dinner Crawl route at a swift pace.  Loyola is hard at work developing a bio-diesel program to produce fuel from used cooking oil at their Lakeshore campus.  We hope that next year the trolley will be powered by this eco-friendly fuel.
  • Loyola is also hosting an exhibit of art produced by artists with ties to Loyola, which you can view at Loyola's new state-of-the art Fine Arts Building, 1131 W. Sheridan.
  • Many businesses will be open and offering treats and specials to Dinner Crawl participants.  Participating businesses include the Broadway Antique Market, Fig Media, Nova Fragrances, Nova Shoes, Soothe Your Senses Day Spa, and True Nature Foods. 

Logistics:

You will begin the evening at the Dinner Crawl Starting Point, Loyola University's Simpson Room, 6333 N Winthrop, where you  pick-up yor passport that guides you through the Dinner Crawl and serves as your ticket to each venue.  You may then set off on foot or via the trolley to visit the restaurants and businesses on the Dinner Crawl route.  You may visit them in whatever order you please.  The restaurants will be serving for the Crawl from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 
 
Loyola University is sponsoring the trolley for the Dinner Crawl, which will pick-up Dinner Crawl participants at designated stops along the Crawl route.  The route runs from Ardmore/Broadway to Devon/Glenwood as well as along Thorndale and Granville.  If you chose to drive, parking is available for $7 at the Loyola parking structure (automated payment by cash or credit card) , 1110 W Sheridan, across the street from the Starting Point - Loyola University's Simpson Center at 6333 N Winthrop.  You can also save yourself the hassle of driving by using one of the many eco-friendly public transit options convenient to the Starting Point.  You can arrive by the Red Line (Granville Station or Loyola Station) or by bus (36 Broadway, 147 Express, 151 Sheridan, 155 Devon).  You can also use good old pedal power, as the Starting Point is easily accessible by bike along the Kenmore and Winthrop bike paths.

Save the Date for EDC Fall Theatre FUNdraiser, October 10th

Save the Date - Friday, October 10th!
EDC will hold our annual Fall Fundraiser at the Raven Theatre on Friday, October 10th at 6:30 p.m.  The event is always an elegant evening of fine food, interesting auction items, and great theatre.  This year we will enjoy the Raven's production of "Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train".  Don't miss this fine event, and it is still only $50 a ticket for a wonderful meal, drinks and a fine theatre production by the talented and award-winning Raven Theatre ensemble.  More details to follow.
