Starting Up and Cutting Costs
|

Starting
a new business can send your bills skyrocketing. Learn simple ways you can save
your budget from slipping through the cracks!
Small
businesses require a lot of capital. It's a fact of life. But when its coming
out of your pocket, you re-evaluate the thing your business really needs. There
are a few areas you can cut back on and save a lot of money you didn't even
know you could!
Cut costs
on shipping. If your business is still growing, you might not have to start
working with a shipping service just yet. Instead, consider just buying a book
of stamps to get you through your postage needs. Also, consider sending
documents and invoices electronically. It saves some trees and the cost of
paper and postage. If you're sending a package, you might want to look at the
U.S. Postal Service because they can often show you the most cost- effective
way to ship your product. This isn't to say that you shouldn't have an account
with FedEx or UPS, just do your homework- as you know, every dollar adds up!
Next, cut
costs on printing. It might be a good idea to get an external hard drive or to
store your important files on an online service. With them electronically
accessible, you might not always need a hard copy- saving you money on paper,
ink, and toner.
Then, cut
costs on telecommunications. You can save by getting internet and phone service
in a lump package. You should also look at online services like Skype and
Vonage to save you money on long distance calls and they work great! With a
webcam, you can hold a face to face meeting online on Skype and not have to
leave the comfort of your office.
The
importance of this next point of advice is multi-faceted. Call in the favors
you've stored up around the years instead of buying products or services.
"Maybe you know an IT person who can help with your computer issues and
you can offer them marketing advice in exchange" (www.bcscredit.com, David
Gass). Calling in these favors and exchanging services not only will help cut
down your costs, they will be useful in networking. Networking, important in
every business, is especially important to a new business because it develops a
relationship with others and can be used to trade services or get
recommendations

Starting and Growing Your Business
| |
There are
many people looking to get ahead and starting their own business.
Unfortunately, not all of them are successful. Here are some tips that the most
successful business owners have in common.
- Evaluate
your business from the shareholders perspective. You can earn a wage at
any job and you most likely have already done that, so you want to look at
what returns you can get from your investment (aka your business). Do this
through paying distributions to the shareholders, increasing the value of
the company so that it has an asset that can be sold at some point, or by
creating a "lifestyle business" where others can run the company
in your absence. This last point gives you flexibility to pursue other
goals in your life and still brings home a paycheck.
- The
founder and president of the Business Credit Services, Inc highlights a
method of logging your hours for a week to see where the most time is
being spent. This is important in focusing on the things that are
important for your business. For one week, catalog where you spend your
time into these four categories (revenue, increase quality, decrease
expense, everything else). At the end of the week, add up the number of
hours under each category. This allows you to see where time is being
spent and where you need to be shifting your focus.
- Measure
your success. Have key metrics that will allow you to measure how your
business is doing. It is recommended to have between 10 and 20 key
metrics, have them automated, and set up an alert system that will notify
you if the numbers are going above or below a set number. That helps you
to regulate and identify the source of the metric shift and create a plan
to prevent any negative consequences.
- Spend
time with people that will push you to strive and grow further rather than
becoming complacent. It is these individuals who will challenge you to
think differently and push you the furthest. Put people on an advisory
board to challenge your goals and question your plans to help make sure
that you are headed towards success.
These are
some tips that may help you in the beginning phases of starting and owning your
own business.
