Edgewater Development Corporation Presents.....

                                       Taste of Bryn Mawr

This year's Taste of Bryn Mawr dinner crawl featured eleven restaurants and four businesses along Bryn Mawr Historic and Commercial District. This event, according to the participants was a huge success- bringing hundreds of people to the restaurants to sample their cuisine.

Food samples were available at each of the participating restaurants and as well as exclusive deals at the participating businesses.

The goal of the event is to help alter the shopping and dining patterns of residents and to showcase Bryn Mawr Ave. as a thriving commercial district. Studies have shown that many locals travel outside of the neighborhood for dining, shopping, and entertainment. However, on June 10 this year, they were regaled by the exciting opportunities provided closer to home. The event started at 6:00 PM and went to 9:00 PM. No one was complaining about still being hungry at the end of the three hours!

The decorated street was festive with the air of excitement as the participants strolled down the street eating and enjoying the evening's entertainment highlights which included many local artists. A wonderful performance outside That Little Mexican Café included artists that just came to "Jam Out" with Daniel Tabion and his fellow performers. A new performer, Kirk Scott, played the bass guitar outside Apart Pizza; Maria Garcia played her acoustic guitar and sang some songs off her album outside of Francesca's Bryn Mawr; and Traysee Leonard blew the crowd away in front of Flourish Bakery on his saxophone. Chicago Apartment Finders, one of the event sponsors, provided a wonderful acoustic performance from one of its employees. Of the participating businesses, Northside Toyota drew a huge crowd by showcasing some of the newest model vehicles alongside the street.

This is the fifth event of its kind to be hosted by the Edgewater Development Corporation. Twice a year, the EDC puts on the Taste events to showcase the extensive commercial options that exist within the community. Be on the lookout for the Taste of Edgewater event coming up (or should I say Crawling up) soon in September!

EDC ADOPT A STATION PROGRAM

CTA Red Line stations at Bryn Mawr and Granville received makeovers under Edgewater Development Corporation new Adopt a Station Program.  In partnership with 48th Ward Alderman Mary Ann Smith, Chicago Transit Authority and City Year Chicago, on June 8th over fifty volunteers painted the Bryn Mawr and Granville Red Line Stations.  Rain deterred the exterior work and viaduct painting that will be completed later this year.  The program is designed to do beautification projects at the L stations.  The work at the Edgewater stations is part of an initative to make improvements in the neighborhood.

Business Tax Credit for New Hires!

With the economy recovering from the last couple years of trauma, small businesses are going to see (if they are not already seeing) a boost in their sales or an increasing demand for their services. Typically a good environment for hiring, businesses now have even more incentive to hire new people as a result of the new government tax credits.

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, expanded the criteria for tax credit to include unemployed military veterans and disconnected youth (ages 16-24). Also, this act opens the door for another 10 groups of unemployed Americans.

The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment, or the HIRE Act, creates tax breaks for businesses employing persons who have been previously employed (not necessarily by the hiring business).
